Jonah, The Man Not After God’s Own Heart

By: TJ Wilder Scripture: Jonah 1: 1-6

In this first sermon from the book of Jonah, we are introduced to the Minor prophet. Immediately we get acquainted with Jonah’s commission to arise and go to Nineveh and pronounce judgement against it, because their wickedness was being judged by God. Instead of faithful obedience from the prophet, Jonah, in rebellion, secures a ship that will transport him as far away from the will of God as possible and take him in the opposite direction, fleeing from God’s presence and the responsibility of his calling and commission. In this sermon, brother TJ looks at Jonah’s reaction to God’s instruction, and challenges us to put ourselves in Jonah’s shoes before we judge him too quickly. What do we do when God calls us to a difficult task when our will does not align with God’s will? We can learn from Jonah that disobedience is never the faithful response for God’s people, and that God will be faithful to complete His purposes and plans.
